As an educator and previous museum exhibit interpreter for the Boston Children's Museum, Zimmer Children's Museum in Los Angeles and The Children's Museum of Atlanta, the children's museum environment has always been a deep passion of mine. I am now in the stages of making my vision for Afrikan families a reality. Please take a look below for more information on the project and how you can help!
Play Pan Afrikan is projected to be an early childhood learning center that offers a preschool program as well as a modest museum. Children enrolled in the preschool program will take part in a hands on and play based program preparing them with the tools they need in order to enter any educational arena they move onto in the following years. Apart from the more academic piece, our children will be exposed to extracurricular programming including Swahili, yoga, capoeira and more.
The museum portion, open to the general public, is a recreated neighborhood representing the diverse influences of Africans from all over. Imagine a community barbershop in Philly, a sacred shrine for learning about ancestors, a supermarket with patties and jollof rice, a Caribbean carnival play space, a Motown jukebox and so much more. All of this will be done through toys, a progressively curated learning space and imaginative play. In each portion of the museum, there will be information about African influencers and innovators that contributed to elements of each exhibit. At the end of each visit, children will not only be proud of their history, but they will be proud to be of African descent because they will see the many influences in the things we
use and interact with on a daily basis. And, most importantly, it gives black families that visit a chance to spend time together in a space that is a direct reflection of who they are.
